Bandhani (also called bandhej) is a vibrant tie-dye craft from Gujarat and Rajasthan, instantly recognisable by its pattern of tiny dots. The word comes from bandhan, meaning “to tie.”
How Bandhani is made
Artisans pluck and tie thousands of minute points of fabric with thread before dyeing. The tied points resist the dye and, once opened, reveal white or light dots against a rich background. A single dupatta can hold tens of thousands of knots — all tied by hand.
What the patterns mean
Dots are arranged into motifs with names and meanings — chandrakala, bavan baug, shikari and more. Red and yellow Bandhani is traditionally worn by brides and at auspicious occasions.
